The Supreme Court on Thursday termed as “grave” the flood situation in Kerala and agreed to hear a plea seeking Centre’s mediation between Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments on the issue of the Mullaperiyar Dam crossing the 142 ft threshold.

Rescue work progressing on a war-footing in Kerala with all three defence forces, the NDRF and private groups pouring into the flood-ravaged state. The Navy has diverted all forces from south to Kerala and the Air Force has deployed 18 aircraft to airlift people from areas entirely cut off by floodwaters. Public transport system has collapsed in many parts of the state, which is grappling with what turns out to be the worst monsoon in a century. Over the last week, 87 people died – 25 of them yesterday. PM Modi has asked defence forces to step up operations.
